Pr ConsultancyBbmac Jan 2001 - PresentMy most recent freelance assignment was working with the Wood Panel Industries Federation, assisting in a campaign against the UK Government rewarding the burning of woody biomass to produce so-called 'renewable' electricity. In addition, I have been doing consultancy work with a youth charity, and with a London PR company whose clients include an International firm of intellectual property lawyers, and a major UK research organisation.I am also on the executive board of Earthrace Conservation, and work with a local branch of Riding for the Disabled in South West England. -
Pro Bono Pr SupportEarthrace Conservation Jul 2010 - Feb 2016GlobalIn February 2010, Pete Bethune, New Zealand skipper of powerboat, 'Ady Gil' (formerly Earthrace), was held captive on board a Japanese whaler, after boarding the vessel to affect an arrest warrant on the captain for ramming his vessel during anti-whaling operations in the Southern Oceans. The sinking of the Ady Gil and Pete’s own subsequent arrest and imprisonment by the Japanese received world-wide media attention. On Pete's return to New Zealand, he set up a new marine conservation charity, Earthrace Conservation for which I continue to work on a pro bono basis as Director of Communications. -
Pr ConsultantFederation Of Racecourse Bookmakers Aug 2009 - Oct 2009In March 2007, the Racecourse Association wrote to all racecourse bookmakers saying that as from 2012, bookies' pitch positions (the locations on racecourses where bets can be placed), bought by the bookies 'in perpetuity of the racecourse' on which they were located, would no longer be owned by the bookmakers. The ‘pitch battle’ had reached stalemate, and at stake were the livelihoods of hundreds of small family businesses. My role was to highlight the dispute through media and stakeholder communications, working with the Federation of Racecourse Bookmakers, who were spearheading the campaign, and their public affairs company. A major part of this short term contract was communicating the news of a landmark agreement between Towcester Racecourse and the FRB.. The news conference was held in the Tattersall Room at the Berkeley Hotel in London, and attended by the Minister for Sport. The overall campaign gained coverage in mainstream media such as the Daily Mail, BBC Radio News, The Today Programme and the Economist, as well as the racing press.Increased awareness achieved through the PR succeeded in putting pressure on the RCA to work with the FRB to come to an agreement on tenure, allowing the FRB to resume negotiations with the remaining individual racecourses towards a satisfactory outcome for all parties.

This was a pro bono role which also included liaison and co-production of media relations strategies surrounding Earthrace with over 40 affiliated sponsors. In January 2010, Earthrace (by then re-named 'Ady Gil' and working as part of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's anti-whaling campaign in the Southern Atlantic Whale Sanctuary, was rammed and sunk by a Japanese whaling ship, the Shonan Maru 2.
