Volunteer Co-Ordinator
• Screened and vetted over 70 potential global volunteers• Negotiated inclusion of the volunteer program on 17 volunteer opportunity aggregation sites• Managed 15 short-term volunteer teachers• Developed the school's 1st volunteer orientation packetBackground:Ometepe Bilingual School is the first free-of-charge bilingual school in Central America and one fo only a few bilingual schools in Nicaragua. The school has its roots in English language classes for adults begun in the summer of 2007. Classes were taught in the open-air restaurant at a local hotel by English-speaking travelers willing to donate their time. Today, the bilingual school has founded an elementary school program and has its own buildings on the grounds of the hotel. In 2013, OBS opened their first eco-friendly classroom, built from plastic waste and sustainable earth-bag technology, and welcomed the first elementary school class. Twelve four and five-year-olds enrolled in that first kindergarten class. In February 2014, the elementary school program started its second year. The previous year's kindergarteners became boisterous first graders and there was a new entering kindergarten class. All students at OBS study in Spanish with a local paid teacher and in English with a series of generous international volunteers. Over the coming years, the school will continue to grow adding more eco-friendly classrooms and more students, transforming an empty field by the lakeshore into a fully-functioning bilingual school for 84 students (12 per grade, grade K-6).The volunteer component of the school is essential to its success. All English language instruction comes from international volunteers who spend a minimum of 2-3 weeks volunteering their time, skills, and English-language knowledge. As a start-up, OBS is growing quickly and recruitment of volunteers is a key element to the success of the school.
English Teacher
• Recruited over 200 unique students (10% of the local population) to try one or more English classes• Taught English to over 70 ongoing students ages 4 to 45• Developed curriculum, lessons, and class materials for 8 different classes• Tracked metrics on student hours, attendance rates, and student demographicsBackground:There are about 1,500 people in Merida and maybe half that in San Ramon. These villages, and a handful of others, are on the south end of the island and are only accessible via an extremely bad road. To give you an idea how bad the road is: via 4-wheel drive, from the port to Merida, it's about 35k. The last 6k is on this 'road' and takes as much time to traverse as the first 29k! During the dry season, the road is passable in the right vehicle. When the rains come, however, it can be a different story. But there is good news. The World Bank has agreed to fund improvements to the road, at least 3-4k of it. On an island where many visitors simply don't go to the south end because it's too difficult to get to, an improved road will mean a huge increase in tourism. As you can guess, more tourists means more opportunity for the local people. The ability to speak English greatly increases the earning potential for the people in the village. Being able to converse with visitors in a common language leads to more business and bigger tips for guides and restaurant staff. Unfortunately, what happens now is that often a group of tourists will bring their own guide from one of the big cities, an English speaker who has had a much better life than those of the people on Ometepe. The issue is that none of that money stays in the community or on the island. I am excited to be sharing my knowledge of English with my students and giving them skills to better compete. This is a volunteer effort.
