Increasing number of consumers are turning into prosumers (produce and consume their own electricity). Rising electricity prices have been a major driver for this. The remarkable uptake of solar and battery systems by Australian homes and businesses have shown a solid commitment to making a positive impact on the environment and taking control of their energy requirements.The initial uptake of rooftop solar systems was mainly driven by lucrative feed-in-tariff contracts. This model however did not promote prosumerism. Since then, the cost of solar systems have significantly reduced. It will become increasingly evident in the future that the cost of generating your own electricity is cheaper than buying from the grid. Self-sustainability is the key. Each distributed energy resource (solar and battery system) should be consuming every watt it generates. Solar and batteries may not be able to achieve this on their own. An intelligent solution with advanced communication capabilities must be implemented with these systems to promote self-sustainability and give back the power (quite literally) to system owners.
