I have recently retired from Cerner after 37 years with Shared Medical Systems, Siemens and Cerner in Project Management and Regional Management roles. I can provide Project Management expertise in the Dallas area full time, or would be available for travel to projects outside the area as a contract staff member. Over the years, I have managed major full Healthcare Information Systems implementations from start to completion with numerous financial, clinical, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy and infrastructure projects. I have extensive work experience with multi-entity, governmental including county hospitals, city hospitals, university hospitals, and other facilities. Recently, I have been focused on managing application hardware migration and application upgrades with numerous sites. Given the many years of experience, I can provide lists of hospitals, clinics, and other facilities I have worked with when needed for specific requests. Along with all the SMS, Siemens, and Cerner applications, I have worked with Lawson, PeopleSoft, NextGen, Tamtron, Windgate and other applications in conjunction with the HIS/EHR applications that were the primary focus of the project activities.

My most recent position has been Lead Upgrade Center Engagement Owner. This role responsible for the timely upgrades for the Cerner Hospital Information Systems. I was highly successful with this position leading over 30 separate engagements for the upgrades and data migration of multiple systems at many large clients. I received high client satisfaction scores (generally 5 out of a scale of 5). I lead the project teams (client and Cerner) through status meetings, coordinating the support needs of the upgrades, and driving the solution to various types of project challenges. The challenges included technology, application, and personnel concerns that these types of projects entail. I monitored the risks, communicated needs, and escalated as needed. I established good rapport with all of the clients and within Cerner which enabled the successful conclusion of these projects.During this period, I provided mentorship to the young consultants that were brought into the group. The mentorship included the healthcare background needed to work with the clients. It also included creating a safe forum for the communication of various project challenges, and lack of specific application knowledge. I pulled in experienced staff to address the educational needs. We also discussed communication challenges. An example, is how to communicate information in ways that minimized conflict, and created a how do we address this situation together towards a resolution. Additional mentoring included working with client PM’s on some of the challenges they had internally with their stakeholders.

Siemens purchased Shared Medical Systems. I remained as the lead on a major project at the county hospital system in San Jose, California. The project included migrations for new versions of every major HIS application, Lawson, and other allied vendors. I then led the Siemens project teams for the installation of networks, application hardware and software in large hospital systems. One site was a net new deployment of products and services at a new hospital facility in Los Angeles. It included all of the HIS applications of ancillary departments, pharmacy, radiology, medical records, laboratory, blood bank, pathology, integration engine and other applications along with the network build, and Siemens Radiology Equipment and PACS systems. During the Siemens years, many of the projects I have led included the addition of additional sites for existing clients. These projects included a large hospital group in the Dallas area with the installation of 14 hospitals that included data migration to support their financial and document management implementations. A net new installation within a University hospital group in Indiana. A net new children’s hospital within the county hospital and university hospital in El Paso, Texas. The addition of two sites for a client in the Temple/Austin area. They were a long term care facility and new hospital. The final project I was engaged with prior to the sale of Siemens Health Systems to Cerner Corporation was 4 hospital new installation on client server applications in the Shreveport LA area. The applications involved included financials, clinicals, nursing, pharmacy, radiology, medical records and other departmental systems. Included were the guidance of the server delivery, staging and network coordination with the client. PM Tools included using my Project Management Professional (PMP) skills, Microsoft Project, Primavera, and various project management tools to monitor and complete the projects.

With Shared Medical Systems, I started with the installation of financial systems, that included General Ledger, Payroll/Personnel, Accounts Payable, Medical Records and other applications as a consultant and subject matter expert. After a period of doing these consulting roles, I transitioned to the role of project lead for a couple of years. I then took on the client relationship role for a large group of hospitals west of the Mississippi. This group is now part of Ascension. While this role included the project leadership of financial system deployment and account management, it also included sales and accounts receivable responsibilities. I then took on the management responsibility for consultants and project managers within the SMS Southwest Region. We were responsible for the installation of over 15 major sites, and the support of the regional sales and client satisfaction. Finally, with SMS I took on the Account Management roll within the region for the major facility clients that ran the software in house. The goal was to migrate these large clients successfully to a new version of the software. All of these clients are major hospital systems within the region and were completed successfully. These migrations were a key SMS strategic goal for the region and across the company. Over this period of time, I increasingly took on more and more complex and demanding positions, which continues to this time.
