I was appointed as Professor of Architecture at the University of the West of England in September 2013 in a part time capacity, enabling me to combine playing a part in teaching the next generation and a deeper involvement with research with the sustainability and design consultancy I have developed since leaving Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in 2009. I maintain close links with FCBS as their sustainability consultant and have a similar relationship with Max Fordham Engineers, where I mentor their growing sustainability group and have a similar reviewing and consultancy arrangement.I have a particular specialism in the impact of our changing climate on the design of the built environment. In 2010 I was commissioned by the UK Technology Strategy Board to write a report reviewing the projected impacts of climate change on the built environment and the opportunities for the industry to meet the challenge of adaptation. This was used as a primer for design teams participating in their £5 million Design for Future Climate programme funding live projects to consider design responses to our changing climate. Lessons learnt from the first tranche of 25 projects underpin my book, Design for Climate Change, written with journalist Katie Puckett, for RIBA Publishing which was launched at Ecobuild 2013. I have also worked with the Energy Savings Trust on improving the thermal performance of the existing housing stock and am a life fellow of the Centre for refurbishment Excellence (CoRE).I was principle contributor and editor for the Green Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work in 2011.I am a CABE Built Environment Expert and chair the Concept Design and Planning Stage work group of the Zero Carbon Hub task group set up to narrow the performance gap between design and as built performance of new housing.

I joined Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in 1980 (or The Architecture Shop as it then was), was made a partner in 1983 and developed a broad experience including master planning, bespoke office buildings, Higher Education buildings, housing and the design of caring communities. I also developed particular expertise in environmental issues and was involved with many of the projects that have contributed to the practice's reputation as leaders in the field as well as the practice’s research work
