About Bill Reason

I am a recognized expert in the field of aviation survival systems; specializing in oxygen systems including OnBoard Oxygen Generating Systems (OBOGS). I have flown as a flight test engineering aircrewman in the T-45 B Goshawk Jet Trainer flying multiple missions of 2 to 4 hours each in direct support of the GGU-26 Advanced OBOGS O2 concentrator, flying with several bio-metric sensors attached to my body during each flight recording my every biological response via real-time range telemetry systems (you don't want to hear the recordings). Those missions included flying to the edge of the aircrafts very high performance parameters in an effort to induce any possible/potential failure modes in the oxygen concentrator while in-flight. These missions represent the most exciting of my career with the US Navy to date. I also specialize in parachute systems and individual state of the art survival items as they relate to survival at sea. I have been involved in the advancement of Naval Aviation and US Navy and Marine Corps aircrew survival for more than 35 years. I have recently assumed the role as manager of the Design for Maintainer (DFM) Lab and the new subset Advanced Designs for Aviaiton Maintenance (ADAM) lab. As a member of AIR 4.6.5 Division at the Naval Air Warfare Center in Patuxent River, MD, this lab represents the Human Interface Technical Warrant holder; investigating, designing and testing new and novel tools and support system and devices that make our Naval Aviation Maintainer the best equipped and maintained group in military aviation.Specialties: Survival at sea, emergency signaling devices, oxygen systems, high performance water craft. Qualified Naval high performance jet In-flight test subject for data collection.

Welcome to the Advanced Designs for Aviation Maintenance (ADAM) laboratory. This lab represents the maintainer in every aspect of their work. The aircraft carrier flight deck has been called one of the most dangerous places to work in the U S Navy. Over the years, we've made tremendous advances in making the environment a safer place, but in the end there will always be dangers lurking. The new and even experienced personnel working on "The roof" must always have their head on-a-swivel. This laboratory will endeavor to find the interface tools and processes that will help our maintenance personnel avoid the few deadly encounters that remain onboard a CVN on a moonless, windy, cold night while those personnel attempt the recovery of an 80,000 pound jet on an icy flight deck. I was there, almost four decades ago and found ways to overcome the environment with items of clothing and safety equipment I purchased for myself. Today, we have processes in place that allow aviators’ access to "State-of-the-art-survival-items". The SOASI program is supported by PMA-202 for aircrew items. Many of those items represent perfect solutions for the maintainer on and off the flight deck. This lab will pursue a similar method of provisioning a line of approved items for use as well as adopting items from the PMA-202 list to be used during the conduct of aircraft weapon systems maintenance activity. In the end, we'll improve the life of the maintainer by recommending better tools and refining processes that will ultimately reduce safety related hazards that can ultimately lead to mishaps.
