I am the author or co-author of 30 books, including "America: A History in Art," "Columbus and the Age of Discovery" (co-written with Zvi Dor-Ner), "Colonial New England on Five Shillings a Day," and the e-book "Key Documents in American History from the National Archives." I am a former contributing editor with Islands and National Geographic Traveler magazines, and am currently a contributing editor with Yankee magazine. My byline has frequently appeared in those publications, as well as The Washington Post Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, Coastal Living , This Old House, and many others. My articles have been anthologized in several collections including Italy: True Stories of Life on the Road (San Francisco: Travelers' Tales Guides, 1998) and Venice: The Collected Traveler (New York: Three Rivers Press, 2002). "In All Directions," a collection of my travel articles, and my novella "A Patent of Nobility," are available as Kindle books.In the course of various assignments I have traveled wilderness waterways in northern Ontario by canoe; retraced much of Christopher Columbus' 1492 route through the Bahamas; twice completed the transcontinental "One Lap of America" road rally; driven the Italian coastline from France to former Yugoslavia; worked on a salmon boat off the coast of British Columbia; covered a 700-mile route through Quebec's Gaspé Peninsula by snowmobile; and crossed North America eight times by train. I have appeared on numerous television and radio programs, and, with friend and sometime collaborator Chris Maynard, have twice been profiled in the New Yorker's "Talk of the Town" section -- first for circumnavigating Manhattan Island by canoe, and second for being co-author, with Maynard, of "Manifold Destiny," a humorous how-to book on the art of cooking atop automobile engines.
