I recently retired as executive director for the National Assessment Governing Board, and started IWB Consulting located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. IWB provides consulting and communication services to mission-driven organizations. While working for the Governing Board, I executed policies and projects initiated by the Board in its oversight of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the Nation's Report Card. During this time, funding for NAEP increased more than 15%, the Governing Board adopted and implemented its first Strategic Vision, and the number of large urban school districts voluntarily participating in NAEP increased more than 20%. Before joining the Governing Board, I served as chief executive officer of Phi Delta Kappa International (PDK), a professional association of educators, where I also co-authored the annual PDK/Gallup Poll of the “Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools.” While at PDK, the family of associations moved its headquarters to Washington DC; acquired Pi Lambda Theta, a collegiate honor society; and launched a Career Technical Student Organization, Educators Rising, supporting high school students interested in becoming educators.Prior to PDK, I held other education leadership positions including deputy superintendent and chief academic officer at the Michigan Department of Education, director at the University of Michigan's Merit Network, and director of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in Michigan. I began my education career as a middle school teacher and high school principal. I am a combat veteran having served in the United States Navy for 30 years, active duty and reserve, retiring at the rank of Captain, and earning the military’s "Legion of Merit" among other personal awards.
