A long time journalist turned journalism educator, I am all about change. Challenging the status quo in constructive ways results in stronger journalism and teaching, stronger and more useful research and creates an environment in which people are willing to embrace innovation. I brought these sensibilities to my work as a reporter for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal in a 20-year journalism career. I brought those same sensibilities to the classroom and as an administrator at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, where I taught for 20 years and where I served as associate dean, associate director and program director. As an administrator, my goals included helping colleagues create and sustain a school environment that looks forward, celebrates innovation and embraces change and understands the significance of diversity in its many forms.I led the USC Annnenberg Diversity Initiative, which examined the school's commitment to diversity in curriculum, student recruitment and retention, staff and faculty hiring and programming; and offered recommendations for improvements. The initiative won the 2012 AEJMC Equity and Diversity Award, the organization that accredits US journalism schools. I also received, with a colleague, the 2011 USC Provost's Prize for Teaching with Technology for one of USC's early pilots in mobile learning and reporting. In 2018, I was awarded the Barry Bingham prize by the American Society of News Editors for my diversity work. Between 2011-2013, I served as an associate director of the USC Annenberg School of Journalism, overseeing graduate admissions, diversity programming, international programs, technology and student life. My duties also include external programs, including developing programs with the Online News Assn, the Maynard Institute and other news and journalism.
