Heliogen is a clean energy company focused on eliminating the need for fossil fuels in all sectors of the economy. Heliogen’s mission is to create the world’s first technology that can commercially replace fossil fuels in industrial processes with carbon-free, ultra-high temperature heat from the sun and to transform sunlight into fuels, including hydrogen, at scale. Heliogen was created at Idealab, the leading technology incubator.

Worked on the initial idea and invested the original capital.

I saw a future in home mobile robotics, and started the company in 2001. After growing the comapny to $25m in revenues, we merged with iRobot.

I started RayTracker to lower the cost of solar energy by building a more modular, lower-cost 1-Axis tracker for solar panels. We grew the company and then merged with First Solar in 2011.

I started CarsDirect as the first place to buy a car fully online. We grew the company, took it public, renamed it to Internet Brands, and sold it to a large private equity firm in 2011.

I saw a future in digital cameras creating a problem for photo management, so we started Picasa as a software product to manage that. We grew the company and sold it to Google right before their IPO and Google used that product as the basis of Google Images today.

I saw a need for a new type of search engine that allowed bidding on keywords, and started Goto.com. We grew the company to several hundred million in revenues, renamed to Overture, took the company public, and eventually sold to Yahoo for $1.6 billion in 2003.

After the Netscape browser was released, I saw the need for an online service like a Yellow Pages for local businesses, and started CitySearch to fill the need. We grew the company to be the largest in the industry, took it public in 1998, and then merged with Ticketmaster in 1999.

After my son David started Kindergarten, I decided to start an educational software company to help him and his friends fall in love with learning. We grew the company over 5 years to be the #3 educational publisher in the world, and eventually sold the company to Havas Vivendi.

I started a company called GNP Development that created a natural language interface to Lotus 1-2-3 and Lotus Development acquired my company in 1985, and I joined the company in Boston for 6 years until founding Knowledge Adventure, an educational software company.
