The Nelson Police Department is an innovative police service that accomplishes its goals by using cutting edge technologies such as DNA, forensic data recovery, intercepts and video surveillance. As well, it continues to rely on historic, “tried and true” methods of service delivery, such as the deployment of foot patrol officers in the downtown core and by, as much as is possible, embracing a “no call is too small” attitude in responding to the issues that are of concern to the citizens. The sworn and civilian personnel are men and women who have lived and worked in Nelson for most of their careers, and who are inextricably woven into the fabric of the community. This builds personal as well as community relationships and strengthens our ability to deliver effective and efficient services to the public. Additionally, the Department strives to “prevent” crime as opposed to “reacting” to crime and mentors and coaches youth in our community through a wide variety of permanent programs like DARE, the PARTY program and Police Camp.The Department looks forward to preserving the peace and maintaining the public trust for at least another 114 years in this safe and active community. There are 11 municipal police departments in British Columbia serving the following communities: Abbotsford, Delta, Central Saanich, Nelson, New Westminster, Oak Bay, Port Moody, Saanich, Vancouver, Victoria-Esquimalt and West Vancouver. The BC Police Act requires each municipal police department to have a board consisting of the mayor of the council who acts as board chair, one person appointed by the municipal council (both Victoria and Esquimalt each appoint a representative) and not more than seven persons who are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. In addition there is one designated policing unit, South Coast BC Transportation Authority Police Service whose police board is appointed by the Responsible Minister under the Police Act in which one of these members must be designated Chair by the Minister, and one First Nations force, Stl’atl’imx Tribal Police Services, whose board is appointed by individual band councils, not by the Minister Responsible under the Police Act.Each police board is mandated to establish and operate a police department in their municipality. The police department is responsible for enforcing municipal bylaws, provincial laws, federal criminal code laws, maintaining order and preventing crime. The police board sets the priorities, goals and objectives of its police department and develops the annual police department budget. The police board is the Employer and responsible for service and policy complaints related to its police department. It also receives complaints against the Chief and Deputy Chief Constables. The board strives for a fair and responsive interaction between police and the community.

Coordinating workshop, conferences, and training for the school districts of the Kootenay Boundary region in British Columbia

The BC Seniors Games were held in the West Kootenays in August, 2011: 3000 competitors attended and 1500 volunteers hosted the event. It is the biggest organized event in British Columbia after the BC Summer Games. The bid was won by the tri-cities of Castlegar, Nelson, and Trail. The Games move throughout the Province each year.
