I began my career in an entry-level library position while I was a high school senior, and over the quarter century's worth of years since then, I worked my way up through the ranks to a role as a regional supervisor. After 26 years in public libraries, I was presented with a wonderful opportunity to work as a Program Manager in the City of San Diego’s Public Utilities (Water) Department. I stepped into a new field of work with enthusiasm and curiosity, ready to embrace the unfamiliar. I am now back in the library field, working as a Senior Librarian with Carlsbad City Library.Throughout my career journey, I gained a firm understanding and appreciation for the importance and interdependence of the numerous roles and positions required to build a successful team. Nevertheless, I am constantly seeking opportunities to learn, improve, grow, and push myself beyond my areas of comfort. My approach to leadership centers on leveraging my years of experience while embracing the qualities that cannot easily be taught, such as compassion, honesty, vulnerability, creativity, and humility. My passions are coaching, mentoring, and building trust to better permit staff and community members to feel visible, appreciated, valued, and connected to the larger organization. I firmly believe that the best motivations are those that intrinsic. My career path has allowed me to work in a diversity of positions, environments, and communities, and these experiences have taught me how to quickly adapt and learn. More than anything, I have regularly found success by employing my emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and communication abilities to build meaningful relationships with staff, customers, stakeholders, and community partners. My greatest gift in life was becoming a parent, as I learned my life was not just mine. That is, I believe we are all infinitely interconnected, and the best way to make our world is a better place is by giving my best effort each day for those I am connected to, both directly and indirectly.I am grateful for the life and work experiences I have had thus far, and I am excited to see what lies ahead. Ultimately, my goal is to have a positive impact upon everyone around me by being a leader and, most importantly, a human being who employs his heart as much as his mind.
