The Ohio Director of Conservation and Assistant State Director sets the vision, leads and manages the conservation activities of the Ohio program of The Nature Conservancy. The Director of Conservation establishes the program’s conservation priorities and strategies and ensures their successful implementation by managing staff performance, helping to secure needed resources and working with partners to increase the program’s conservation capacity. Highlights include work with businesses to create the 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program (4Rcertified.org) which is improving nutrient management on almost 3 million acres in three states, launch of the Sunshine Corridor forest protection project to create a pathway for species to move as climate changes, and the development of a statewide stream and wetland restoration program. Directly manages a team of 27 full time and 13 seasonal staff.

This work first involved managing a group of interdisciplinary colleagues to prove on the ground, and then promote through policy, the role that forests play in abating climate change. The full team was also involved in identifying and planning for the impacts of climate change on land and water conservation. Highlights include achieving certification for the Noel Kempff Climate Action Project (REDD+) and initiating other carbon projects in Brazil, Belize, Mexico, China and Indonesia that are conserving millions of hectares. The first position in this area of work was as the program forester, and over a period of 7 years promotions led to the Director role. While in a leadership role, this team grew from 5 to over 30 staff.

Advisors assist the division in promoting cooperation on forestry practices and programs with other agencies, political subdivisions, and private interests.

CSDA was co-founded by its Executive Director Christiana Figueres, who later served as the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
