Billy Newman is a Jazz and Brazilian guitarist who performs in New York City for over twenty years. Since 1987 he has been traveling to Brazil in order to research Brazilian music and perform with local musicians Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Recife and Florianopolis. While a recipient of Composer’s residencies three years in a row (from 2007, 08, 09) from the prestigious institutions - Yaddo and The MacDowell Colony - he had the opportunity to compose a new book of original music. He performs his original music with the “The Billy Newman Sextet”(aka Brooklyn Brazil Bop) as well as music by other composers in the Brazilian Frevo, Samba, Baião, Choro, styles. He also regular plays Jazz Standards and these days sideman with Afro-peruvian, jazzKlezmer and Batucada groups. His own groups have played in Joe’s Pub, Satalla, Barbés and various music festivals. Billy's other group "Brazilian Acoustic Ensemble" has performed at many major cultural venues in the city including The Guggenheim, Museum of Modern Art and Brooklyn Museum. Billy has completed two CDs of his original compositions and a recording showcasing 6 of his original Choros. In 2016 he completed his first solo recording of arrangements, Brazilian choros and his own compositions. He has written a book on Brazilian Guitar published by Alfred Music/National Guitar Workshop in 2002. He also performs regularly solo Jazz and Brazilian guitar for private functions and at various venues around the New York area. His formal training includes Composition and Harmony with Dennis Sandole (the teacher of John Coltrane), Jazz Improvisation with famed pianist Hal Galper, Classical Guitar with Dennis Koster, and Brazilian Percussion with Vanderlei Pereira.
