Prof. David McComb• Led the EM characterization in a multiple disciplines team awarded $6.34 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop novel magnetic materials by unlocking the power of skyrmions, nanoscale spin textures that offer promise for storage miniaturization.• Created a new analysis method to reconstruct phase information from 4D-STEM datasets, named "Bright Field Balance Method (BBM)". Compared with traditional differential phase contrast or transport of intensity equation method that using defocus series, this method shows strong advantages in terms of effective resolution, reliability, signal-to-noise ratio, and simple optical configuration, paper in preparation.• Found and pioneered the stimulated nucleation of skyrmion using in-plane fields in centrosymmetric magnets, extending the scope of skyrmion holding materials and manipulation methods, resulting in 1 peer reviewed journal papers, 1 filing patents and 2 paper in preparation.• First real-space imaging of magnetic skyrmion in MEB grown plan-view FeGe thin film.• Observed small skyrmions at RT in a new class of skyrmion materials, i.e. Fe-rich FeGe thin films.• Explored the potential and fundamental limits in quantifying Jahn-Teller distortion at the nanoscale with picometer accuracy using position averaged convergent beam electron diffraction.• Studied the interface driven properties in a series of functional thin films using EELS.• Exploring the in-situ study of magnetic domain and skyrmion behavior under biasing current.• Developing new techniques to imaging orbital ordering in electron microscope using machine learning and retrieved EELS imaging.• Awarded presidential fellow from the graduate school of the Ohio State University, and student award from the Microscopy Society of America.
