I am interested in public health issues affecting Asian communities in San Diego, especially Hepatitis and osteoporosis. As Co-founder and Executive Director of the Asian Pacific Health Foundation – formerly Asian Pacific Health Center – I have had experience with Hepatitis B screening in the community in the Hepatitis B prevention project funded by the California Endowment grant (2003 to 2005). A pharmacist in Saigon, I worked at Miles Laboratories - Bayer Pharmaceuticals in Indiana and completed a MS degree in Microbiology from the University of Notre-Dame in 1980. After moving to San Diego, I continued working in clinical diagnostics while being a pharmacist intern at UCSD Medical Center. After Board licensure in CA in 1986, I worked in various settings, mostly for the County of San Diego Dept of Health Services at Edgemoor Hospital in Santee, where I still function periodically. I have strong ties with the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at UCSD, where I lead 1st year students in their Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience requirements. The students provide hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia screening and Safe Meds program at health fairs organized by APHF at churches, temples and community centers. In 2013, Thuy Nguyen, Lillian Nguyen and Xuan Phan worked on Cost effectiveness of Point of Care HCV, HBV tests and screening at APHF with Drs. R. Gish, J. Fontanesi and B. Tran as co-mentors. Posters on the work were presented at HepDart Meeting in Hawaii in Dec 2013 and Singapore Hepatitis Conference in June 2014.In summary, I have a broad background and interest in the preventive aspect of healthcare, and with the APHF, we are strongly committed to work with UCSD groups and collaborators to screen at risk groups in San Diego County for Hepatitis B and C, and provide linkage to care for affected individuals.Specialties: Public health issues affecting the Asian communities in San Diego, especially Hepatitis and osteoporosis.
