Chartered mechanical engineer and company director at 4c Engineering, Jo has spent over a decade in a variety of renewables and R&D industries, during which he has developed his strong abilities to understand multi-disciplinary systems, and to identify, analyse and solve complex problems. In his two years as a mechanical engineer at AWS Ocean Energy, he was heavily involved in the design and engineering of their HSCD test rig, including installation in Orkney, and the front end engineering and structural design of the proposed first-of-a-kind AWS-III device. This included hydrodynamic loading and structural engineering calculations, production of CAD models and engineering drawing, FEA studies to support design work, and MATLAB programming to analyse motion, wave loading and mooring load results from wave tank trials. He also worked on development and refinement of a new absorber concept, including design of a test programme for inflatable fabric structures.

Leading a group of staff from the maintenance department with widely varying skill levels, this was completed on time and within budget.• I first designed, constructed and tested a small prototype to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed larger-scale project given the limitations of the materials, tools and skills available.• I built and programmed an Arduino-based data logging system with which to monitor the system.• I undertook a survey of the hospital’s energy use and investigated the potential benefits, costs andrisks of implementing technologies such as photovoltaics and LED lighting at this site.
