About Blaine Mccarthy
I am a team lead and senior scientist passionate about researching non-viral delivery agents to enable novel genetic technologies that improve patients’ lives. After I earned my Ph.D. in synthetic polymer chemistry, I became fascinated by the way polymers can protect and deliver genes. I was grateful to earn a Cancer Translational Nanotechnology (Cancer-TNT) postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University where I leveraged my background in polymer synthesis to research degradable polymers for mRNA delivery.I am now a senior scientist at Earli, where our mission is to make cancer a benign experience through diagnostic-mediated early intervention. As part of the delivery team, my contribution focuses on engineering the core components of LNPs to improve tumor transfection while avoiding rapid clearance by the liver. My long-term goal is to successfully translate genetic technologies to the clinic.

Team Lead, Delivery Bioengineering
Current
Senior Scientist, Delivery Bioengineering
■ Leads project to engineer the core components of lipid nanoparticles (ionizable lipids, sterols, and phospholipids) to increase tumor transfection while avoiding rapid clearance by the liver.■ Pioneered design of experiments (DoE)-guided LNP screening pipeline that increased throughput 8-fold utilizing the Automated Library Synthesis system (Unchained.
Scientist, Delivery Bioengineer
■ Designed and evaluated non-viral delivery systems including polymers and lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) using an iterative workflow including nanoparticle formulation, biophysical characterization, testing in flow cytometry-based cellular assays, and collaborating with colleagues to test in animals.■ Advised other teams within Earli which LNPs to use for.
Cancer-Translational Nanotechnology Training Fellow At Stanford
■ Synthesized, characterized, and evaluated a new family of degradable polymers for mRNA delivery. ■ Collaborated with leaders in translational research (Levy & Felsher Labs) to investigate application of degradable polymers for mRNA therapies.
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow, Ph.D. In Chemistry (Materials)
■ Developed strongly reducing, organic photoredox catalysts that enable controlled synthesis of well-defined polymers (target molecular weights, PDI< 0.2). ■ Published 3 first- author papers and co-authored 13 additional works while collaborating with labs in other disciplines (i.e., photophysical chemistry) and across different institutions.
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow, Ph.D. In Chemistry (Materials)
■ Started doctoral work at the University of Colorado, Boulder then moved to Colorado State University with research advisor.
Undergraduate Researcher In Chemical Synthesis And Chemical Biology
■ Generated new synthetic routes to access functionalized amino acids.
