About Blake Dodson
I am a PhD candidate in the UW Department of Microbiology. My current research focuses on how the oncogenic virus Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV), the causative agent of Kaposi's sarcoma, manipulates cellular lipid metabolism to drive the development of this cancer. More broadly, my scientific interests lie in the interplay between viral pathogens and their hosts, both in how viruses manipulate host cellular pathways to serve their own interests and in how the host immune system responds to viruses to restrict their replication. Working in the KSHV field has also sparked my interest in the cell biology, oncogenesis, and cancer biology fields. Upon graduation, I will pursue a career in vaccine, drug compound, or biologics/therapeutics development in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.

Phd Candidate
I am a PhD candidate in Michael Lagunoff's lab in the UW Department of Microbiology. My project functions at the interface of virology and cell biology to determine how the oncogenic virus Kaposi Sarcoma Herpesvirus (KSHV) rewires cell lipid metabolism to drive oncogenesis. KSHV is the causative agent of Kaposi sarcoma (KS), a type of cancer with no specific treatment aside from standard chemotherapy. My thesis work aims to determine both how KSHV alters lipid metabolism and why these metabolic changes are important to the survival of the infected cell, informing more specific and effective targeting of KS tumor cells in future treatments.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
I worked in Jesse Kwiek's lab in the Department of Microbiology at The Ohio State University studying the impact of HIV-1 infection on host cell fatty acid synthesis. I initially worked with a graduate student on determining how HIV-1 upregulates host fatty acid synthase (FASN) before taking on an independent project investigating FASN secretion from HIV-infected cells, culminating in an undergraduate Honors research thesis.
