Profile bio

About Bill Mcmichael

I've spent the past six years researching and writing a nonfiction book I've tentatively titled Journey of the Jewels. It revolves around the Hesse family jewels that were stolen by three U.S. Army officers from a German castle as the dust of World War II was beginning to settle - and the apparent reappearance of some of those gems in the wreckage of a private airplane crash in Montana 15 years later. The rough draft is complete. I am seeking agency representation. My backstory: I found my professional niche in life 38 years ago when I was "hey-you'd" into writing stories about my Army unit for our base newspaper. That began a career in newspapers as a reporter, photographer, team editor, and mentor. U.S. military operations and culture were my primary focus; a highlight was three years at the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill covering current events, the formulation of military policy and Pentagon spending for the Military Times papers. Along the way, I covered cops and courts, science and environmental issues, crime and punishment, social matters and health issues, particularly those involving veterans. I've written book reviews and articles for Military History magazine and continue to do so. I'm an advocate for a strong and enforceable Freedom of Information Act; I (and my lawyers!) have won two lawsuits that forced federal agencies to release records they were withholding or slow-walking. In October 2015, I voluntarily retired from Gannett's News Journal, taking a buyout along with nearly 500 other employees across the chain. I began work on the book, my second, the following spring. Oct 2015 - Present

Reporter

New Castle, Del.

Military reporting morphed into a hybrid beat: the military, and southern New Castle County. On the former, covered all active, reserve and veterans matters in Delaware from a local, regional and national perspective. Areas of focus: Dover AFB, the Army and Air National Guard and the Wilmington Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Also covered municipal affairs and development matters in the state's fastest-growing area - the area of southern New Castle County that lies below the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, anchored by Middletown. Also wrote on a variety of other topics such as the introduction of the Affordable Care Act, the open carrying of firearms into public buildings, the rise of heroin addiction in the state, job losses over the past decade and an increased reliance on food stamps.

Mar 2012 - Oct 2015

Senior Reporter

Newport News, Va.

Served as senior reporter and Hampton Roads bureau chief; covered a broad range of U.S. Navy operational, cultural and personnel issues. Stories covered included investigations into Fleet Forces Command's rushed and controversial budget-cutting shuttering of U.S. 2nd Fleet; the design of F-35 replacement jet engines that, in their transport packaging, will not fit into standard carrier-based cargo aircraft; and the pros and cons of veterans treatment courts that can provide non-punitive alternatives for vets who run afoul of the law.

Military Times Newspapers

The Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

Reported for Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps Times, independent Gannett Co. weeklies that cover the breadth and depth of the military. Focus was on personnel, pay and benefits issues that affect all the services; also covered the Defense Secretariat, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and budget, war policy, social, legal and medical policy issues. Stories ranged from examinations of the military's ban on gays in uniform and the potential impact of repeal; the sinking 2008-09 economy's impact on military recruiting and retention and the reduction in bonus payments that would likely (and did) result; congressional debate on overriding the doctrine that bans lawsuits over government medical negligence against service members from suing the government; and the military's growing concern over the diminishing pool of physically and mentally fit potential recruits. Stories also appeared in USA Today and other Gannett newspapers.

Kennedy. Also filed for the other Times newspapers and sister publication Defense News, and filed from ships at sea for the Gannett News Service during the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan.
