I was fortunate enough that the opportunity was something that Bob found exciting and Bob joined us as Art Lead/Lead Environment artist. I touched on Bobs considerable skills as a 2d/3d artist in my last recommendation, so ill focus more so on the tremendous value Bob brought to the team as an Art Lead. In our 2+ years working together, Bob was instrumental in engine and tools development for Artillery, lending his 10+ years of knowledge and passion for gaming to our challenge of an in-browser high end graphics engine as well as our first title, a stylized rts game. Its rare to meet someone that learns as well as Bob and is at the same time as patient and kind a teacher, making sure everyone on the team is up to speed and working efficiently. Bob mentored everyone on the team including myself, providing guidance and training on how to use the tools he helped create, how to keep our directories organized and how to run our proprietary tech with some tricky scripting commands. Its difficult to put into words how challenging these aspects were to wrangle, and without Bob i don’t think we could have moved forward. The first thing that Bob set to was understanding the perimeters of our unique challenge (building an in-browser engine and game), and then closely working with designers and engineers, providing feedback from a technical art perspective, building art tools and setting up an organized framework of perforce and git directories and making sure everything was optimized and ran smoothly. All the while, bob was working closely with myself to build art slices and env art high bars to push things forward visually, eventually bringing all aspects together to create our first map for Guardians of Atlas. If ever there was a challenge that required both sides of the brain on a daily basis, this was it and Bob absolutely killed it. Under Bob’s guidance and tutelage, i saw our junior art team and interns grow considerably. Bob was always the kind and understanding presence that any team needs, even in the toughest of times. His constant positivity was very appreciated and his patience in making sure we were well-verse in the technical aspects of our project ensure that we were able to deliver a solid game with quality visuals well under budget and on time. I really enjoyed my close partnership with Bob at Artillery and wish it could have continued to bear fruit.
