Through this period I was engaged in self-learning to broaden my business information skills using resources by subject experts. These included: * Ralph Kimball, et al.: Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit; Data Warehouse Toolkit; Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit * Paul Turley, et al.: SQL Server 2008 Reporting ServicesAs part of this process, I created several databases for my own use, including managing storage media and study resource content and progress.As the great recession continued, I also applied significant time to my other great interest in musical performance.More recently, I decided to transition my efforts again toward data/business analysis.

I provided business analysis and applications development services to the CRICO Strategies division of Risk Management Foundation of the Harvard Medical Institutions, a CRICO company, in Boston. The major project during this period was the development of a defendant-level outstanding claim reserve report under a complex multi-layered insurance coverage structure in an MS SQL Server/Business Objects environment. My activities included soliciting stakeholder requirements, gap analysis, creating data flow diagrams, specifications, data extract modifications and reconciliation.

I acted as both a consulting business analyst and applications developer for Risk Management Foundation of the Harvard Medical Institutions (a CRICO company) in Boston. My responsibilities included implementation of reports for professional liability insurance claims management, loss prevention, accounting, financial management and other external consultants (accountants and actuaries). This was done in a Sybase SQL Server relational database environment using SQR/Brio reporting tools and, subsequently, MS SQL Server and Business Objects/Access. I also provided data mining and ad hoc reports on request from financial management using SQL and Excel.A major team accomplishment was the design and development of a data mart to support efficient, historically-capable, multi-company end-of-period reporting for accounting, finance and actuaries, including multi-dimensional loss development reports (incurred, reserves & payments). I participated in creating specifications as well as hands-on SQL coding of the data extract and load procedure (ETL), reconciling the initial load and creating a report to audit the ongoing monthly loads.Other contributions included:* Solved accounting and billing problems related to a unique general liability customer by developing a business case report that included work flow documentation and report review leading to recommendations resulting in significant improvement in customer satisfaction* Analysis and development of defendant-based, multi-company reports under a complex policy structure, including retained and reinsured limits* Report gap analysis related to the conversion of the claim/underwriting system from Sybase to MS SQL Server* Participation on a team to evaluate data warehouse and business intelligence tools, including stakeholder interviews to solicit requirements

As an Internal Systems Consultant, I sought opportunities to leverage the corporate claims and underwriting database to provide insights to senior management, internal loss prevention staff, as well as risk managers at the insured institutions about statistical trends useful for anticipation of potential future financial exposure and intervention to reduce losses. This included production of prototypes and specifications for development of new reporting in a Sun Unix/Sybase SQL Server environment to meet those business needs. I also performed data mining and analysis to generate information in both tabular and graphical formats for presentation by senior management to the board of directors.I subsequently was appointed as the IT Applications Development Manager and supervised a staff of three programmers to meet the expanding demand for business-critical information by both internal staff and the insured institutions. In this role, I continued to prepare specifications and prototypes and provide quality control (code reviews, data reconciliation) prior to production installation.
