Amazon designs their supply chain starting with the customer and working backward, which is why they’re able to deliver what the customers want, when they want it, at the price they need. When you read my profile, you’ll see how plant warehousing, DC operations, transportation and supply chain 3PLs are failing to learn from Amazon to design solutions around a manufacturer’s customers. Recently, a client’s CPG plant was put at risk by a Top 25 3PL because it would have cost a little extra to support DC equipment, local shuttle and staff capacity needs. For weeks, this happened due to truck, equipment, and labor shortages. The 3PL prioritized localized “costs,” which caused the product to back up at the plant instead of shipping to the DC or retailers. This supply chain wouldn’t have been able to service customers or meet new on-time, in full initiatives. In another instance, cost-based suggestions would have slowed inventory turns by 50%. These are the challenges that can arise when the supply chain isn’t synchronized and customer-centric.Over 40+ years in the supply chain industry with companies like Schneider, MNX, Road Runner Express and Transport Corp America, I’ve seen a consistently strong focus on internal results, with a secondary focus on the manufacturer and their customers.
