Also reported national news events, initially for United Press International, then Associated Press and Mutual Radio Networks, including spot-interviews with Gerald Ford, Nelson Rockefeller, and coverage of the extended legal battle over convicted killer Gary Gilmore's demand to be executed, the disastrous Teton Dam collapse in Idaho, and failed stunt-jump of the Snake River Canyon by daredevil Evel Knievel, This reporting was recognized with a series of national AP news coverage awards and honors from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Duties included hosting the station's morning country music program, technical set-up and hosting of remote broadcasts promoting program sponsors, and news gathering and anchoring of local newscasts (This news programming grew from occasional local news inserts as available a few afternoons each week, to hourly weekday local news briefs and extended news roundups each weekday afternoon.)

While still in high school, produced Rap Line, a weekend, two-hour listener call-in program, on this major-market radio station. Booked on-air guests, wrote and produced program introductions, spot breaks, imaging elements and promotional spots for each show, screened listener calls and occasionally filled in as on-air host.
