During these ART years, in addition to my own directing work (at ART, American regional theatres, and overseas) I directed the Dramaturgy and Playwriting Programs of the Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard University, taught courses and graduate seminars, advised and supervised 30 student productions, published 32 newsletters for the A.R.T., wrote over 50 articles, supervised assigned dramaturgs on 22 or more A.R.T. productions, gave frequent public lectures. I served as president of the International Samuel Beckett Society (1994-96) and president of the Poets’ Theatre (1995-97). I also invited and hosted some 70 national scholars and writers to the A.R.T. Symposium series under a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, which I administered. My NEH invitees included: David Bevington, Rosette Lamont, Stephen Greenblatt, Errol Hill, Michael Holroyd, Budd Schulberg, Neal Gabler, Austin Quigley, Jan Kott, Anne Paolucci, Daniel Aaron, Christopher Ricks, Harold Bloom, Richard Gilman, John Lahr, Marjorie Garber, Emily Vermeule, Eugene Goodheart, Daniel Aaron, Gregory Nagy, Coppelia Kahn, Enoch Brater, Thomas Postlewaite, Morris Dickstein, Tim Page, Seamus Heaney, and many others.
