'Colour The Road' publishing 2025.The inspiring story of Drops Cycling, a world class professional development programme that raced globally between 2016-2024. The project proudly nurtured 64 riders from 20 nations and raced in 24 countries through 9 years. Producing multiple National Champions, animating the Classics, lighting up the Tour de France and forming World Champions and Olympians.Debuting on the world stage in 2016, the founding ethos was to create a happy and supportive environment where riders could develop and reach their true potential, irrespective of age, experience or status. Widely acknowledged as one of the world’s most successful development programmes of the past 9 years.“The story is a motivating and inspiring one. A qualified British Cycling Coach and UCI accredited Sports Director, Varney turned a dream into reality leading Drops on to the world stage. Growing from a squad made up solely of British amateur riders, Drops were soon mixing it with the world’s finest professional riders at the highest level. Having progressed from rock bottom to 7th on the Women’s World Tour rankings in just three seasons."In 2024 they remained Britain’s highest ranked and most successful UCI women’s team and continued to punch above their weight on the world stage with a squad of 11 fully professional riders from 8 countries. The ethos and founding principles never changed, to create a happy and supportive environment where riders can develop and reach their full potential irrespective of age, experience or status. “Bob will engage and inspire, providing a very personal insight into one of the greatest ‘fairy-tale’ stories of British sport. His enthusiasm is infectious.”Sadly, unable to raise backing to become a ‘UCI Pro Team’ with minimum salaries and full time staff for 2025, the project ceased at the end of the 2024 season.

I started my coaching career in 1997 developing racing cyclists at the Milton Keynes Bowl, gaining my first coaching qualification with the Association of British Cycling Coaches. Early mentors included the legendary Peter Keen and Pete Read. I continued my coaching pathway on the British Cycling programme, forming Team Keyne a youth development team based in Milton Keynes. Team Keyne became one of the standout youth development programmes of its era, producing multiple national champions and elite riders with one turning professional and riding multiple Tour de France. I gained further accreditation with the Union Cycliste Internationale in 2015, attending an eight day course at their HQ in Switzerland gaining a Commendation in Problem Solving. I successfully coached, guided and mentored multiply national champions and Olympians during my tenure at Drops Cycling.Post lockdown I extended my reach to the commercial sector working with several local business owners to grow their businesses. This is an area that I am passionate to focus on, encompassing lifestyle and wellness to provide a holistic approach to personal growth and development. Combining decades of commercial experience with more recent world class sporting achievements, I am well positioned to deliver excellence across multiple sectors.Advocate of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
