About Bobby Sims
My name is Bobby Sims I am a senior pharmaceutical sciences major at North Carolina Central University. I entered into my college career with a passion for the sciences and majoring in biology. With my biology degree and background, I had planned on continuing my education after graduation by attending medical school in hopes of creating my own medical practice. Halfway through my freshman year, I was given a great opportunity to jump-start my career and learning with an opportunity to work in the universities laboratory alongside a senior scientist. This opportunity presented me with a head start to learn my way around a professional-based laboratory, and the equipment in the laboratory, and it gave me an opportunity to perform labs that will be performed in the future. Although this opportunity required me to switch my major from biology to pharmaceutical sciences, it ultimately positioned me a step ahead of my peers. At a young age, I realized how much I had a passion for both conducting experiments and working in a laboratory. This passion combined with my recent exposure to the pharmaceutical field, made me feel that i had possibly found my career. Working in the lab with senior scientist Dr. David Lamson, having more time to think as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and speaking with one of my advisors, helped me to understand my want to continue down this path rather than going to medical school. Entering the spring semester of my sophomore year my main goal was to maintain on track with my new career path. Focusing on getting a good internship, would set me apart from everyone else and help me gain valuable experience that I would apply to both my future studies and my career. After some interviews and meeting some team members, I accepted an internship opportunity with The Gilbert Family Organization, which is part of Rocket Mortgage’s Family of Companies. Throughout the internship, I was tasked with collecting information on medical treatments, medical devices, and medications that are used as standards of care for NF1 patients. Then compiling the information I found into large documents called primers, which could span from 6-20 pages, that will be used later to help our team leader to make decisions on where the organization will go moving forward. My time in this internship helped me hone: my note-taking skills, my ability to differentiate key information from both websites, public documents, and scientific journals, and lastly my document formatting skills.
