We focus on coordinating development efforts between industry players and academic researchers to develop pragmatic solutions and accelerate the market penetration of new technologies in agriculture. Under the WATS umbrella, in 2017 I authored an extensive technical analysis of the air permits for the largest oil terminal in the country, proposed for construction here in Vancouver, and submitted the report as written testimony to the state regulatory body, EFSEC. The permit was so riddled with errors, omissions, internal inconsistencies and misrepresentations that it was unenforceable and lacked credibility. This report effectively delayed the permitting process for several months. I used the report as the technical foundation for a social media campaign, helping to defeat the proposal based on solid data, and the resulting impact on the community.

NEEA has programs in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. As a contractor through Next Chapter Marketing, I am providing engineering support for the Agricultural Irrigation initiative. Nearly 7 million acres are irrigated in the Northwest, consuming roughly 650 aMW of power. Today's grower irrigates their fields with a uniform application of water to insure the driest part of the field is adequately irrigated, leaving most of the field over-watered. It is estimated that a 20% efficiency gain can be achieved in this decade by integrating a few existing technologies into an automated irrigation decision support system. I have been providing technology strategy support, and helping plan technology demonstrations at multiple farms across the northwest in next year's growing season.

Lumos was developing a hybrid solar concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) system which produced both electrical energy and thermal energy. Our approach used mirrors and non-imaging guided optics to concentrate solar energy onto small, efficient photovoltaic (PV) solar cells to produce electricity, while simultaneously capturing the useful thermal energy from the heat sink under the PV cell, and delivering it into the building’s water heater and/or HVAC system. Using this approach, our hybrid CPV system would reduce the consumption of electrical power supplied from the grid, and simultaneously reduce the consumption of fossil fuel for building hot water systems. The thermal energy could also be used to power a building's cooling system using absorption chiller cooling units. The system was designed to produce distributed energy at a lower cost than fossil fuels, without consuming any cooling water or generating any greenhouse gases. Our first generation product would have achieved > 50% total solar efficiency, which is unprecedented in the solar industry. We perfected a novel optics design, and were seeking grant support with the Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Labs. However, in the soft economy, funding did not materialize, and the development was mothballed.
