Profile bio

About Bogdan Gorganeanu

Bogdan 'otaku' Gorganeanu has worked continuously in promoting, publishing, establishing festival/convention logistics and subcultural networking since the 90s. He lives with his parents like a true otaku, not far from the historical Dracula castle. As an intensive teleworker he kept a low profile even after he became a respected independent publisher. He always kept the underground ethos alive while pursuing a broad recognition for the otaku phenomenon at home and abroad.Since 2001 he founded and administrated one of the first webforums (manga.ro) where most of the community crystallized around common topics such as Japanese pop culture, manga/anime, fanfiction, cyberpunk, visual kei/J-pop/J-rock, AVM's, microchip music/gameboy music and toy/character design. He was also one of the first Romanian vj's to use systematically anime-based source materials for the country's rising electronic music scene. He actively promoted local young and gifted artists/mangaka's, talent-scouting in the different regional centers. In 2004 published Manga Inc - he published the first ever local manga zine. Otaku Magazine (2006, otakumag.com) and CosplayGen (2010, a world wide cosplaying magazine, cosplaygen.com) later became keystone mags for Romania first and then increasingly for a globally diverse and mostly English speaking readership based in Asia, Europe, America or Japan. Since 2006 he is the founder of the first Romanian Otaku Festival (otakufestival.com) – one of the two most important conventions in Romania, now at its 9th edition; a country-wide independent fan-based event.

Listed skills include Graphic Design, Advertising, Logo Design, Art Direction, and 30 others.

Cosplay Gen is a collectible magazine (due to its book-like appearance), published twice a year. It is entirely non-profit, self-financed and contains no advertising, therefore its purchasing contributes directly to the next issue.Cosplay Gen is an independent magazine (no ADS) focused on the worldwide promoting of cosplayers and of various Japanese and Asian fashion trends. We idolize cosplayers from around the world and we cherish their amazing work by publishing extended interviews; reviews from various cosplay events; articles centered on cosplay photography, cosplay trends, cutting edge Japanese pop culture; handy tutorials…It’s a project born out of our deep love for the cosplay phenomenon and for Japanese contemporary fashion culture, resulting from the continuous need to highlight, recognize and celebrate such tremendous creativity. We consider that a good project is always a useful one, regardless of many other means to accomplish this purpose. From our point of view there are always new and exciting trends, metamorphoses and mutations. Therefore, a strong collaboration with the best of contributors is our aim, bringing forth such materials to a very heterogeneous, enthusiastic and playful readership.

Otaku Mag

Brasov County, Romania

Otaku MAG is a deep fandom research magazine that tries to promote the rich variety of Otaku (sub)culture, with the help of artists, editors, translators, curators, students, professors, readers, designers , data scientists, media theoreticians, digital culture critics, cultural workers, creative firms, fan communities, photographers…Starting with 2006 we published a new magazine. “First Issue”,”Love&Technology”, “Creatures”, “Kaidan”, “Play”, “The End of the World” where all thematic issues, each focusing on specific contemporary topics. Most of these issues have regular columns on Cosplaying, Otaku Fashion, Japanese ghost stories, designer toys, new recommendations on manga/anime/games/movies/books, reviews, artist profiles, events, interviews and current exhibitions.Otaku MAG was a new breed of mag with an established transnational pedigree. This was probably best mirrored in its change of the main language choice. First it was Romanian, then bilingual, and in the end just international English. Each time, nearly half of the magazine was dedicated to black&white original art works by young Romanian manga/comic book artists, as a way to establish a platform for works that would have probably remained unpublished and under-appreciated. This was a magazine made after working hours, with money invested by fans from salaries and day-jobs, with total creative freedom and without commercial pressure.Otaku MAG has also published a series of posters and attached CDs and DVDs. For the PLAY issue Otaku MAG presented an international compilation of microchip, gameboy, 8 bit, microtunes, chiptunes DVD. For the KAIDAN issue we had a CD compilation with dark sounds, ghostly atmospherics and electronic nightmares by a motley crew of international musicians.
