Profile bio

About Bonnie Will

I am a well-trained writer, thanks to the various courses I took to obtain a B.A. in English, such as Creative Writing, Introduction to Poetry Writing, Grammar and Vocabulary, and Expository Writing. As an English major at UNCC, I was required to take courses in a number of genres, such as American Literature, poetry, British Literature, and Immigrant Literature, etc. English majors are required to do a great deal of reading, and then they do a lot of paper writing. In Expository Writing, for example, we needed to journal every day, which entailed writing a couple of sentences about what was happening with us that day, and then we commented upon it. This activity trains the student to focus on her/his writing. Our mid-term exam included an examination of all of our daily journaling by our professor, and if we didn't journal every day, we needed to make up all of those journal entries, in order to earn a passing grade. This requirement taught us students that to be a writer, you must write every day and think about your writing. During the semester, we worked on many group projects, where we "threw out" our idea of what to write about, and then the members of the group commented about whether or not they thought our idea would work. Then, we gathered material from the media (newspaper, TV, and books, etc.), and expounded upon our idea. We learned proper grammar; for example, in writing, it looks neater if you tuck your puctuation mark inside the quotation mark. Here's an example: Little Johnny said to Little Susie, "What are you going to do today?" In one of my English courses, Swift and Pope (Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope), the course included several quizzes, a mid-term exam, and several papers. When writing papers, we were required to stay in the time of these two British writers, the 1600s and the 1700s, because if we didn't, our papers were failures. This grading system seems very harsh, but it trained us to be disciplined writers.

Listed skills include Creative Writing, Teaching, Tutoring, Public Speaking, and 29 others.

Current

University City Branch

I have been volunteering at this library branch since February 2011. In the Circulation Department, I process holds, shelve books, trace missing books, and weed books that are not being checked out very often. I read to children, or have them read to me, in the Children's Department. I really enjoy my two days of volunteering at the library very much, as I love books and interacting with people. I am hoping the library will have a part-time position available for me sometime soon, since they have more money in their current budget than in previous years. If not, I will continue to enjoy my volunteer opportunity.

Coach

Current
Talents Are Discovered (Tada)

Charlotte, North Carolina Area

In February of 2010,I attended a three-day, 12- hour total, Certification Training Session for this coaching company. This start-up company, which has been in the planning stages for about 10 years now, emphasizes talent discovery and development in at least two areas. For example, if the students have an interest in music, they are also encouraged to develop mathematics skills, because they are useful in reading notes and keeping time, with music. I am looking forward to this company's offering their coaching of students in more than the three schools and community centers that they were working in, in February of 2010.

Tutor

Sylvan Learning'S Collaborate Partnership Group

Charlotte, North Carolina Area

I tutored kindergarten and second-grade students, in reading, reading comprehension, and writing, at two Charlotte, NC public elementary schools, under the No Child Left Behind Act. Adams Brothers Inc.

Charlotte, North Carolina Area

I worked three days per week in the one-secretary office of this manufacturer's representative's business. They sell equipment, such as scrubbers, to companies that are required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to install them. I typed the reports, specifications, and letters that the field representatives of the company and my employer, Robert Adams, needed. Also, I was responsible for answering the telephone and filing. I was often the only one in the office, as my employer and the field representatives were on the road for much of the week.

MacKinnon (deceased), a primarily real estate lawyer, for about two and a half years, until my husband and I were transferred to Charlotte, NC, with his employment at IBM, in Kingston, NY. I typed the legal papers necessary for real estate closings, such as deeds, mortgages, and settlement papers. I prepared the required papers for the accounts which were turned over to the attorney for collection. I took dictation from my employer and typed letters. On occasion, I assisted the attorney with land title searches at the County Clerk's Office. Also, I answered the telephone, and was responsible for filing.
