I have spent my career designing, implementing, maturing and managing comprehensive security operations for global organizations. These operations focused primarily on threat intelligence and incident response, but generally included all the other components and sub-components of security operations, such as threat detection, vulnerability management, major incident or cyber crisis management, incident response exercises or simulations, threat hunting, eDiscovery, forensics, budgeting, vendor management and project management. I have also managed or consulted on business continuity/disaster recovery (BC/DR) operations.I began my career in information security and cyber security while in the US Army, after working in reconnaissance and counter-reconnaissance. I held various positions, including shift officer in the security operations center (SOC), but my most significant assignment was directing a cyber incident response team (CIRT) charged with responding to events in the field on a moment’s notice, based on escalations from regional cyber incident response centers (CIRC).I was recruited into the private sector by RSA Security. While at RSA, I worked with half of the companies in the Fortune 500 to help them implement, improve and mature their CIRCs and SOCs. I then implemented the security program at Stanford University and managed the operations team. After Stanford, I built, matured and led the Security Operations organization at ServiceNow into a global follow-the-sun operation by recruiting, staffing, training and managing SecOps teams in Australia, India, UK and US, and then empowering them with tools, technologies, processes, procedures, and metrics to set them up for success.Today, I continue to help organizations architect and mature security operations and their functions, as they seek to achieve world class operations.
