During my employment at the Student Sustainability Initiative (SSI) at Oregon State University (OSU) I helped advance a culture of sustainable and socially responsible behavior among OSU students and the greater Corvallis community. I planned and promoted events, managed the outreach efforts and student involvement in events and projects, recruited volunteers, and built mutually beneficial relationships with diverse campus and Corvallis organizations. I assisted SSI staff with their event coordination and promotion, and informed students, campus organizations and other OSU event committees about how to become involved in sustainability affairs on campus and provided them with the resources OSU had to offer to advance sustainable practices. In particular, I reached out to and engaged with the event planning and community outreach committees of OSU’s Cultural Resource Centers, the Women’s Center, LGBTQ Pride Center and various other diverse student groups. Three of the largest campus projects I provided support to were:1. Planned and facilitated a workshop on sustainable business practices with two local businesses, a non-profit and a keynote speaker for Transformation without Apocalypse, a symposium organized by OSU’s Spring Creek Project that had over 1,000 attendees, and also assisted with the marketing of the symposium. 2. Assisted OSU’s Memorial Union (MU) president and staff in their effort to implement sustainable practices during events and throughout the MU building with a focus on waste reduction, and water and electricity conservation.3.
