As a platoon leader deployed to Kandahar Province, Afghanistan I focused my efforts on building an enemy cache predictive model for my Troop area of responsibility and developing two Afghan National Army officers and Afghan National Police officer. By creating a statistical model taking terrain and historical activity into account, my platoon was able to focus our patrols and ultimately locate two of the largest weapons caches in the Squadron area of responsibility. By investing time and effort on my partnered Afghan Army officers, we reached the point where both men were conducting independent patrols or leading joint Afghan-US patrols with full pre-mission briefs, timely reporting, and the use of maps and GPS.
