As a Senior Tech Lead, I led the backend infrastructure of the HubSpot Content Management system, working closely with a family of other tech leads to push forward on shared initiatives. One project was porting our legacy python to code to 500,000 lines of Java code which made our services faster, more reliable and secure.I was also the primary instigator and developer for HubDB, a new persistent storage service, built on HBase, for HubSpot CMS sites that provides the power of a SQL database with a UI similar to a spreadsheet.

We developed the UI for WYSIWYG Page Editing as well as a custom-built serving and rendering backend. As a tech lead, I spent a portion of my time helping team members succeed and the rest of the time building cool systems that our customers love.

As one of the first few engineers, I was responsible for critical parts of the application server and web applications for all of our Social TV analytics products. I was primarily responsible for designing and building out the application server that merges, collates, caches and simplifies data from various backend services and large datastores. That data was then exposed in various formats such as CSV, JSON and PDF via REST-based APIs that became the data source of reference for internal and external front-end applications.I also built several key internal tools and designed a single sign-on system. Recognizing a need for rapid iteration on complex client reports, I championed then implemented a self-service reporting architecture based on BIRT. My primary technologies used included Java, Spring, MySQL, REST, Ruby, Maven and JavaScript.

I was responsible for the technical integration of the backend systems that power all video content played on Yahoo! network sites. I helped with integration of Maven Networks, a recent acquisition. I laid out plans for convergence and modernization of legacy platforms into a Java-based set of well-factored systems. I also led a group of senior engineers to review architectural designs and discuss technical topics of interest.

In the Yahoo! Media Group, I managed teams of engineers responsible for critical Yahoo! websites accounting for tens of millions of dollars of revenue and billions of monthly page views.I built, from scratch, a strong engineering team for Yahoo! Tech, the first new Media property at Yahoo! in five years. The site was launched in 5 months and extensively used AJAX, CSS, accessible HTML, semantic markup, and web services, pioneering technologies at the time.To increase my efficiency, I built a web-based tool to manage Agile process and projects, integrating with Bugzilla. The tool became the standard used by dozens of teams across the company, increasing effectiveness and visibility.

I led Yahoo! News through a complete redesign that tripled revenue and dramatically increased unique users to make Yahoo! News the most popular News site in the world, 10 million unique users greater than competitors such as MSNBC and CNN. Yahoo! News handled 10x spikes in traffic during significant news events such as the Iraq war. I pushed the team to rebuild legacy infrastructure with modern technologies and design patterns.Recognizing the emerging power of RSS as a distribution method, I promoted RSS use within Yahoo! News and created the first feeds in 2003, becoming a recognized leader within the company for RSS and blogging. RSS feeds now account for a significant percentage of incoming News traffic.I built the Yahoo! Weather RSS feed, which still powers many of the weather tools and widgets across the web today.To reduce technical redundancies, I led a team to build a company-wide content store of news data based on NewsML, MySQL, perl and REST. The system was designed to efficiently and reliably process, normalize, index and distribute thousands of news articles to dozens of Yahoo! properties daily.As our site grew and operational complexity increased, I converged and strengthened our property monitoring systems onto Nagios, providing visibility into site issues and performance. I also built a system to report on feed publishing time from content partners to live web servers.I was an early MySQL evangelist, building a shared, replicated cluster of geographically disparate machines from spare hardware. I offered the service to other Yahoo! Media properties as a simpler way to build data-driven sites. This system served millions of transactions per day for critical media sites.Additional side projects included a company-wide knowledge base, a book lending library application, blogging tool, and various utilities for managing MySQL databases.

I came to LAUNCH to conceive and build LAUNCHcast, the world's most popular online radio service, and pioneering community-based personalization for mainstream audiences. There I helped rebuild LAUNCH's on-demand streaming video application, optimizing for scalability, programmability and expandability.I also managed the daily activities of teams comprised of up to ten engineers, created estimates and timelines, and monitored the progress of multiple simultaneous projects. I built a project management/task management/bug tracking web site which was adopted throughout the organization by technical and non-technical personnel. I implemented development processes such as peer reviews, QA and requirements standardization.

I developed software in ASP, C++, and built an InstallShield installer for the first implementation of Microsoft's Passport authentication system.

Firefly was a startup born out of MIT Media Lab research. There I worked first-hand with clients such as BarnesandNoble.com and CollegeBeat to integrate Firefly software into their existing web sites. I managed the project that brought the first customer live onto Firefly's registration and profile exchange network. I wrote the server-side scripting component of Firefly's web site personalization product in JavaScript and VBScript on Solaris/Netscape and NT/IIS platforms.Firefly was purchased by Microsoft in 1998.
