I volunteer part time with Dr. Ying Han, a UCSF glaucoma specialist. I edit manuscripts and collect data for glaucoma-related clinical studies. As of August 2021, I have co-authored two papers in peer-reviewed journals.

At UCSF, I scribed primarily in urologic surgical oncology and genitourinary medical oncology with periodic shifts in 10 additional specialties, including pediatrics, geriatrics, ophthalmology, dermatology, and hepatology. My principle responsibilities included documenting within the Epic (APeX) electronic medical record during patient visits, gathering and concisely summarizing outside records, and helping physicians communicate efficiently with their staff. Within these fast-paced clinics, I strengthened my ability to complete simultaneous, time-sensitive tasks and communicate quickly and effectively with providers, administrators, and patients.

LifeLong Medical Care is a community-based health center that serves low-income residents of the East Bay Area. I scribed in family medicine and women's health clinics, documenting the patient's medical history, physical exam, and assessment and plan during encounters. I also coordinated follow up, including sending lab and imaging orders and placing specialist referrals, and provided technical support to providers on the Epic electronic medical record platform.

In the Ifshin Violins rental department, I created welcoming, positive environments for our customers as I helped them select instruments. In addition, I managed many administrative tasks such as collecting, inputting, and maintaining contract data, processing billing transactions, and responding to inquiries via phone and email. Since our department managed 2,000+ active rental customers, meticulous organization and confidentiality of sensitive customer data were key. Since we served a diverse population with a range of knowledge and experience with classical instruments, I became adept at quickly recognizing a customer’s comfort level and responding in the most helpful and supportive manner possible.

I served as a Tutor at Whitman College in two capacities: Through the Academic Resource Center as a one-on-one general chemistry tutor, and through the Chemistry Department as a drop-in tutor in both general chemistry and advanced chemistry courses. In the former, I met with 4 students individually over two semesters in order to improve grades, confidence, and satisfaction with the subject matter. In the latter, I was available twice-weekly to provide guidance on homework, laboratory assignments, exam preparation, etc. to all students. In each role, I fostered independent problem-solving skills by identifying knowledge or confidence gaps and developing plans to address these areas. With the individual students, I focused on longitudinal success by setting goals, designing strategies for self-motivation, and continuously communicating with administrators and faculty regarding progress and areas of concern.

The Jon Collins lab at Whitman College focuses on the development of biocatalysts for the efficient preparation of important small molecules and the application of these molecules in traditional organic synthesis. During my time in the group, I advanced a novel, chemoenzymatic synthesis of the natural product epoxyquinol A by optimizing and characterizing the products of a key iodolactonization-based synthetic step. My role required regular experimental planning, execution, and analysis, reviews of relevant literature, and careful documentation and organization of data. I gained technical proficiency in many organic laboratory techniques including flash column chromatography, thin-layer chromatography (incl. TLC stains), 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy (analyzed in Bruker TopSpinTM), IR spectroscopy, and HR-MS. My project culminated in the successful identification and characterization of key synthetic intermediates. I presented these results in a poster presentation (2017) and oral presentation (2018) at the Whitman Undergraduate Conference, a poster presentation at the Murdock College Science Research Conference (2017), and a senior thesis earning honors in my major.

I served as a Resident Assistant in North Hall, a mixed upperclass-underclass housing option at Whitman College. Before beginning this position, I received an intensive, ten-day training covering topics in conflict resolution, active listening, crisis management, event planning, community building, and more. While acting as an RA, I applied and further developed these skills in order to serve as a mentor and confidant to 60 domestic and international students, plan and execute events for groups of 25 to 100+ students, and promote and maintain a healthy and active community. I was also able to build skills such as being assertive in tense situations, undertaking and completing simultaneous projects, and staying tuned-in to the wellbeing of a diverse population of students and staff.
