During this project, I identified and assimilated possible techniques in cluster analysis to develop a procedure that facilitated the automated identification of the optimum number of clusters within a generic dataset. Specifically, I implemented a tool that made use of the generic and robust k-means clustering algorithm in conjunction with the weighted gap statistics. Prior to the project, I had a broad computational skillset, but no firm knowledge of artificial intelligence or common techniques within the field of educational data mining. As such, this demonstrates my ability to rapidly adopt new techniques and translate these into practical tools and solutions. Importantly, I was able to deliver a tangible outcome efficiently within the time constraints, demonstrating my excellent time management. To achieve this, I ensured clear communication with the wider team to update the project objectives if needed and ensure that the software produced remained compatible with the wider learning analytics tool. As a result, this tool is now in use within their wider educational platform, assisting over 1000 teachers in providing personalised pedagogy to over 12,000 high school students in science education. This work also led to the award of $1350 to attend the EDM2023 conference and present these results to the wider academic community.
