Braden Crooks has over a decade of experience in leadership roles within the space of human-centered design. He is a founding partner at Designing the We, a for-purpose design studio supporting community, social and economic development. dtW are the creators of the nationally renown exhibit, Undesign the Redline. The dtW team designs plans, programs, policies and enterprises together with local communities, governments, institutions and organizations who are dealing with deep crises, from the history of Redlining to the future of work.Braden is Chair of the board of The New York State Sustainable Business Council, which represents over 3,000 businesses championing an equitable and sustainable economy in New York State. Braden graduated from the innovative program MS Design and Urban Ecologies at Parsons, has taught ecological thinking in urban issues and produced a live audience webseires about art and activism in New York City. He is an RSA Fellow.He received his undergraduate education at The Pennsylvania State University for Landscape Architecture. In Pennsylvania, he founded Groundswell PA, a Community and Environmental Rights Initiative, which campaigned for and passed a “Community Environmental Bill of Rights” in the borough of State College, PA, by a popular vote in November of 2011. This was the first instance municipal "rights of nature" were passed in the United States by using a popular vote. Groundswell helped pass a second initiative in Ferguson Township, PA, in November of 2012.Braden lives and gardens in Brooklyn, NY.

We championed legislation that created a local bill of rights in State College to ban fracking, which was successfully enacted by popular vote on November 8th, 2011. “Democracy Rising” is a 15 minute documentary about our campaign that premiered in the summer of 2012Role:Community Organizer. Founder of Groundswell, primary leader, organizer and spokesperson. Directed roughly twenty volunteers and seven member core council. Primary architect of strategy, message and coalition building. Facilitated discourse and consensus decision-making within the Groundswell team. Objective:Pass a local Community and Environmental Bill of Rights to Ban Fracking in State College, PA. Continue to promote passage of similar legislation elsewhere and assist others in doing so. Educate the public on issues related to Community Rights, Environmental Rights (or Rights of Nature) and fracking. Success:Legislation passed with 72% of the vote, considered a major victory. First place in the nation to ban fracking with Community Rights by popular vote. Second successful popular vote for Environmental Rights in the world. Passed again in neighboring Ferguson Township in November of 2012.CELDF: www.celdf.orgThe Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund wrote the legislation, consulted on strategy. I continue to work with them as a Community Organizer.
