We are at the pinnacle of something great. Our understanding of human pathology continues to expand, and rapid advancements in medical technology are finally delivering the tools we require to cure the many diseases that have so far evaded our intellect. These diseases exist within our DNA. Cancer, AIDS, type-1 diabetes, Alzheimer’s. All of these diseases have genetic roots. Cancer develops following mutation of the genetic code, AIDS results from the human immunodeficiency virus integrating into the genome, type-1 diabetes develops when the DNA that generates antibodies of the immune system recombines to target the insulin producing cells of the pancreas, and Alzheimer’s disease develops from the accumulation of amyloid plaques in cells of the brain, a process discretely regulated by our genes. So what if we could somehow change our DNA? This is the rationale behind gene therapy. Gene therapy has the potential to treat nearly every disease that afflicts us. The last several years has seen leaps and bounds in the development of the gene delivery systems we have long desired for the manipulation of our genome. Our biggest challenge now is translating this current cutting edge research into clinical therapies. I’m currently in search of a gene therapy group who can nurture my ideas, and help me build upon them. I’m passionate about gene therapy, and believe we can make rapid progress in this field of medicine. Progress is neither automatic nor inevitable, it takes passion.
