Research Topic: Understanding stomach ulcers through synthetic biomimetic chemistry: the role ofnickel(II) geometry in the active sites of urease and [NiFe] hydrogenase● Purpose of project was to look at nickel-containing active sites of urease and [NiFe] hydrogenase● Synthesized a series of BAIIH ligands with increasingly bulky substituents. The presence of thebulky groups should decrease the coordination number and increase the possibility of synthesizing pentacoordinate nickel(II). This information will then help us understand the role of the pentacoordinate nickel(II) found in urease and [NiFe] hydrogenase and ultimately better understand H. pylori and its role in gastric ulcers and other diseases.● Characterized via GC-MS, UV-VIS, Infrared Spectroscopy, and Thin Layer Chromatography.

Research Topic: Synthesis of Two Photochromic Chemicals● Purpose of project was to observe how light interacts with photochromic chemicals.● Synthesis of two different photochromic chemicals was attempted in the laboratory. The firstchemical, a spiropyran, 1,3,3-trimethyl-9’-hydroxyspiroindolinenaphthoxadine.The final productwas not isolated in the synthesis sequence. The second photochromic chemical, N,N’-bis(cysteine)pyromellitic diimide (BCPD), is an imide which displays both photo and electrochromism. The BCPD was successfully synthesized in a 53% yield. When irradiated with sunlight, the BCPD undergoes a chemical changed from yellow to blue.

● Learned time management, how to analyze and clean data, SQL queries, and how to effectively communicate with a team.● Worked on the Data Anonymization Project in the Information Management Department on a data anonymization project where the team was tasked with masking personal identifiable information (SSNs, Addresses, Phone Numbers, etc.) from possible threats.● Led the summer interns during Holman Day of Caring.
