  • Divx, Inc.
    Director Of Content Acquisitions
    Divx, Inc. Aug 2004 - Jul 2007
    Los Angeles / San Diego
DivX, Inc. was a VC-funded video technology licensing company and content aggregator/distributor with market-leading video CODEC that competed against Windows Media & QuickTime.I was recruited by DivX’s CEO to help launch their content business and break through 4 years of Hollywood content licensing stagnation. While internet VOD was an exciting new opportunity, it was still viewed as disruptive to the traditional media incumbency and hence was met with overwhelming fear and skepticism by film studios, distributors, TV networks and record companies. It took a deep auditing and reworking of the company’s content provider value proposition, a removal of the wrenches from its lengthy licensing / deal-making processes, and a ton of hustle, but in just under 2 years, I:✔ Secured over 5000 titles from 70+ content providers such as Starz Media, Eurosport, INA (French BBC), Video Action Sports, as well as dozens of distributors, record labels, and production companies ✔ Secured over 90% of the licensed content on the Stage6.com platform✔ Helped drive Stage6.com from 0 to 17 million monthly unique visitors in under 18 months✔ Brought Sony Pictures back to the table for a groundbreaking deal that opened the gates to the Hollywood Studios

    Malibu, Ca
Surf Channel was the world’s first niche cable and interactive network devoted to surfing, surf culture, and board sports lifestyle. This business venture came to fruition after partnering with 2 TV executives from Channel 4 (France). I identified a great market opportunity for an all-board sports cable network and wrote the breakthrough business plan that eventually secured $5M from private equity (PE) investors to launch the network with a European cable operator, MCM International. Results:✔ Wrote the business plan used to raise our initial $5M✔ Acquired 3 media companies with large libraries of action sports content✔ Structured ground-breaking blanket sync/master use license giving the company access to millions of songs royalty free for use in programming✔ Developed all licensing processes and documents
  • Seals Communications Corp
Associate Vice President Of Business Affairs
Seals Communications Corp Sep 1997 - Mar 1999
    Greater Los Angeles Area
Seals Communications Corp. was the largest producer of niche and extreme sports programming for ESPN, ABC, and Outdoor Life.As a recent law school grad, I was able to apply what I had learned as an intern and summer associate at several music and entertainment law firms to drafting everything from talent, sponsorship, network series, production services / co-production, joint venture, and IP licensing contracts to copyright and trademark applications. Supporting the CEO’s endeavors in partnering with Fortune 500 sponsors, I also learned how to get the best out of sponsorship negotiations and finance the production and distribution of TV properties through a combination of title sponsorship and either a barter or time buy. The breadth of licensing, production and distribution deals I worked on at Sealsco was instrumental in helping me become a more creative and nimble intellectual property deal maker and rights management expert.
  • Business Affairs
"On Tour" Live Concert Series Aug 1996 - Mar 1997
    Greater Los Angeles Area
"On Tour" was a big-budget, multi-camera, live concert TV series that aired on PBS. I supported the President of the company as well as outside counsel in redlining, negotiating and administering contracts with record labels and publishers for the production and distribution of live musical performances from the biggest artists in the world at the time including Smashing Pumpkins, Goo Goo Dolls, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, and dozens of others.
