Catalyst Development

 Developed kinetic models for liquid phase formic acid and butyl formate reforming as part of a larger strategy for the production of fuels and chemicals via biomass derived levulinic and formic acids Combined experimental and theoretical work by utilizing microkinetics to fully elucidate reaction mechanisms for formic acid in order to rationally design novel bimetallic catalysts.  Developed the use of atomic layer deposition as a method for catalyst stabilization and as a route to the creation of bi-functional catalysts Used reaction kinetics, infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy (STEM and STM), x-ray adsorption spectroscopy, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, x-ray diffraction, chemisorption, and surface area analysis to characterize catalysts Developed competitive proposal writing experience to gain access to Department of Energy General User Facilities (Advanced Photon Source) and for yearly Department of Energy grant renewal for the Dumesic Research Group Mentored 3 undergraduate students and 1 high school student during their semester long research projects

 Utilized the self-assembly of block copolymers to create and investigate novel ultrafiltration membranes. Studied materials for ammonia adsorption to transform ammonia production via decentralized production while simultaneously liberating farms from external energy and fertilizer requirements. Mentored 2 junior undergraduate students during their summer research projects.
