Graduate Research Assistant

-Operated a commercial, ultra-high vacuum, low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscope. Investigated the electronic characteristics of newly discovered topological materials by performing spectroscopic and nanoscale transport experiments.-Wrote MATLAB code to analyse gigabyte scale raw data in an efficient and semi-automated fashion and created intuitive graphical representations of complicated measurements.-Routinely monitored and maintained cryogenic liquids to ensure a stable 4 K instrument temperature. Regularly scheduled helium orders within the institute and refilled dewars to ensure liquid nitrogen and helium was always available.-Guided my research by planning future project goals, adjusting and adapting my experiments to suit new scientific advancements and discoveries, and also devised new experiments to confirm my measurement results.-Machined UHV compatible components, modified the existing system for new measurements, and replaced current instrument parts to improve vacuum pressure. -Presented my research at conferences and schools of varying sizes, both in poster and oral formats. Altered my presentations to accommodate a wide range of audiences, from experts in the condensed matter physics field to high school students.

Teaching Assistant

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

-Was a teaching assistant for three lab oriented courses-ENPH 259: Circuit design and analysis -This course is usually the first circuit design and analysis experience for students -Focuses on RC, RLC, transistors, and digital logic -Assisted students in person (and virtually in 2020), explaining basic concepts and debugging non-functioning circuits-PHYS 408: Optics -This course focusses on introductory techniques to optical experiments, with four major experiments being: 1. Characterising a HeNe laser 2. Operating a Michelson interferometer 3. Developing a HeNe cavity 4. Exploring Fourier optics and filtering -Assisted students on all four experiments, guiding them through the labs-PHYS 159: Introductory Physics Laboratory for Engineers -Course focusses on basic experimental skills (taking measurements and data, fitting, lab reports, etc.) -Helped students virtually to complete labs and analyse data

Graduate Research Intern

Jülich, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

-Learned a new software for a modified 4-probe STM technique within a two-week time frame, quickly starting solo measurements which investigated the electronic properties of a thin film topological insulator.-Integrated into a new research environment, adapting to a different group dynamic and structure with a stronger emphasis on individual responsibilities.-Promptly familiarised myself with new scientific instrumentation, including high-voltage scanning electron microscopes, and low-noise multi-measurement electronic devices for small current and voltage detection. Unwanted noise was characterised through Fourier transformed signal spectra, systematically eliminating potential sources until an adequate baseline was achieved.

-Designed an experiment to determine the dielectric permittivity of sapphire, used to focus electromagnetic fields onto potential new cavity materials, looking for materials that could increase the efficiency of the current accelerators.-Investigated the effect of sapphire on EM fields using ANSYS High Frequency Structural Simulation.-Designed all components of the experimental apparatus using SolidWorks. Ensured materials were chosen such that interference with other components was minimized.
