Commercial Estimator

Urbandale, Ia, United States

After about a year I was asked by the Senior Commercial Estimator to interview for the open position of Commercial Estimator within the company. I was grateful to be extended the job offer and knew I had a vast amount of knowledge to learn as the position usually required experience or schooling in that field, neither of which I had.I spent the next three months learning all I could from the Senior Estimator. The company also invested into my education providing me with multiple opportunities for personal and professional growth.During this time I learned even more on how to communicate to businesses as a representative of a company as I had to interact with many other construction companies on a daily basis. I also increased my skill set to include multiple software programs including AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, and various Estimating Software. I quickly became eager to learn more of AutoCAD and Excel and spent a good deal of time outside of work practicing and reading about each.As a commercial estimator I worked on a variety of projects and proposals, ranging from a single bathroom countertop to large corporate renovations exceeding $500,000. From this I learned a great deal about project management as well as time management.I consider my time here as some of the most valuable as the Senior Estimator became a mentor to me and remains so even though we are in different lines of work.

Lead Cnc Operator

Urbandale, Ia, United States

At Renaissance Granite & Quartz I was able to find a position that fit my skill set and met my schedule constraints. The environment as well as the managerial duties were similar to my previous position. I had a smaller team and fewer machines to supervise which allowed me to spend more energy on professional education. After a few months, and much study, I learned how to program each CNC machine. As the company grew, I was able to ease the burden of the programmer and spend a portion of my day programming for the next day's tasks while supervising/operating my team and machines. The quality of work became drastically more precise and I had to develop a craftsmanship mindset with much higher standards. Each piece was going to be on display in a house or workplace and needed to have and maintain a level of beauty. Due to this mindset I continually sought out methods to maintain efficiency while increasing quality. It was in this position where I began creating standard operating procedures to be used by each operator to maintain a uniform and high quality product.

Cnc Operator / Lead Cnc Operator

Urbandale, Ia, United States

Due to the adjustment of all 2nd shift hours being transitioned to an overnight 3rd shift, it was no longer tenable for me to continue as both a student and an employee of Doll Distribution. I chose to find employment elsewhere and continue attending college. The manufacturing industry appeared to be the best candidate for maintaining 2nd shift hours through the rest of my time at Grandview University. Being hired on as a CNC operator with no experience was a blessing. After five months of diligent learning and experience, I applied for and was promoted to the position of 2nd shift Lead Operator. This was a very humbling experience for me to have many experienced CNC Operators apply alongside me, and for me to be offered the position. As my first managerial position, I read a number of books and sought mentors where I could find them. I worked on my ability to listen to and make confident decisions based on what information I could gather. I had eight team members and twelve machines I was responsible for during my time which further developed critical skills like; time management, quality organization, clear communication, empathy for my team, and an appetite for learning.

Order Handler / Forklift Operator / Cdl Delivery Driver

Des Moines, Ia

In order to become a full-time college student, I needed to find a position that kept my mornings and early afternoons free for school. Drawing upon my past experience with Fahr Beverage, I sought out the Budweiser distributor for central Iowa. Upon being hired with a recommendation from my past employer, I started out as a Order Handler and quickly became re-certified as a Forklift Operator. I also became the back-up CDL delivery driver for the 2nd shift.Although the duties with this role were very similar to my time at Fahr Beverage, the environment had a number of new characteristics I needed to adapt to. I learned to work on a much larger team and was able to see the consequences of how a small mistake on a large team can grow exponentially if not dealt with swiftly. I also developed a passion for creating efficient workflow systems so that effective communication can be simple for any size team across multiple shifts..

Commercial / Residential Painter

Des Moines, Iowa Area

Upon my decision to return to Des Moines, I sought out what I considered a "filler job" but found the growth that came from being a painter to be just as valuable to my professional development as any job I held before. In this position I honed my attention to detail far greater than any other position before. Another growth opportunity came through learning how to interact with home-owners and talking through their desires for how to make their residence feel like home. In this role, I developed the mentality that I am there to serve the customer's desires, not my own. This mentality has stuck with me through each position I have held through the years. As a painter I met a wide variety of personalities that I had to learn to interact with. This experience was surprisingly quite different from interacting with business owners, in both demeanor and approach. It was also required of me to work well with a team as many tasks worked best with two people.Overall, I do not look back on this as a "filler job" but one that help develop me into what I am today.

Cdl Delivery Driver

Waterloo, Iowa Area

Once again, I requested to be transitioned into a role with greater responsibility and, once again, I was blessed to be given one. I began training with the delivery drivers on their routes while learning how to operate a semi tractor-trailer from anyone willing to teach me. After a couple weeks of studying and test driving within the large and open parking lot, I took and passed the three written tests and the three driving tests in order to obtain my Class A CDL driver's license. After a few months of training and being a back-up driver, I was given my own route to manage. Each route was managed by a salesman and a driver, I was in the unique position of being both the salesman and the driver for the route I took over, This added layer of complexity pushed me out of my comfort zone and grew my skills rapidly over the next two months.I developed the ability to communicate with business owners and managers and draw out needs and deliver potential resolutions. I also learned how to interact professionally as a representative of one company to an array of personalities and business models. Understanding velocity of product and replenishment forecasting became an integral part of managing these individual accounts. As a semi delivery driver I maintained safety as my top priority on and off the road. Treating everyone with patience and respect, qualities not often found among those commuting. Through this experience I developed greater interpersonal skills and a much greater attention to detail.

Forklift Operator / Order Handler

Waterloo, Iowa Area

I began my employment at Fahr Beverage as a Retail Merchandiser. Upon request of receiving more hours, I was moved into the redemption center. During my time there I developed stronger organizational skills through organizing randomly assorted aluminum cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles. I also developed the ability to communicate effectively within a loud, machine driven, environment.Once again I requested more responsibility and hours, and as a result I was placed in the warehouse as an Order Handler. Shortly there after I completed my forklift certification and added Forklift Operator to my job description.Within this environment I developed safety as my priority while inside the warehouse, becoming more apt to foreseeing potential hazards of each action I or others take. An attention to detail became necessary in my job duties as our orders had to maintain a near perfect fulfillment rate. This, in turn, developed my interpersonal skills in communicating with other warehouse employees as well as the delivery drivers to ensure accurate and timely order fulfillment.
