Life is a path. It weaves itself back and forth, a reflection of our choices as we grow as people and realize our potential. Walking the road of life can be difficult, but will the strength of your convictions take you down the path to your destiny? In my experience, probably not, but that doesn't mean you can't have some fun with it!Let's rewind a little to the year 2010 , the world is changing. A new app called Instagram, is sweeping the nation, Apple is upgrading from iPods to iPads, and one bright-eyed 18 year old is pursuing his dream of becoming a doctor at Northeastern University (spoiler: it's me!). Studying Behavioral Neuroscience in my undergrad, I applied for an internship with Boston Children's Hospital, in their developing bio-repository program. It was there I realized that my duties processing DNA, digitizing sample records, and tracking the pathology of frozen specimens was incredibly........boring.Slightly discouraged, I began working weekends at a South African food cart run by my parents. It was there that I realized that my life long love of food could translate into a career! While technically still in school for Behavioral Neuroscience, I took an internship at a fine dining restaurant called Menton. Menton was exactly the turning point I needed. I found myself enamored with the fast-paced lifestyle, and tried to entrench myself in every aspect of the restaurant, eventually landing in the kitchen (after eight "just for fun" cooking shifts).The kitchen is where I truly began to grow into my skin. For almost 10 years, I would continue my life as a cook, learning how to manage myself and others. I learned how to be confident in my skills, and my knowledge, as well as how to organize my time. As I continued in the industry, I was placed in more positions of responsibility, with more people to manage. I quickly learned how to get the most of myself and my team, and learned how to cook some amazing food along the way.It wasn't until COVID hit, that I took of my rose-colored glasses. The same intensity that made the hospitality industry fun and exciting, also made the type of work unsustainable. The high emotions, the perceived stakes, and lack of support for workers made me realize I would need to make another change.Considering my previous success in pursuing food, I decided to follow another passion of mine, Video Games. Similar to my career in hospitality, my variety of knowledge and experiences has helped me to quickly understand the basics of software development, and I'm excited to see where I go next!
