At the onset of the pandemic, a partner and I founded and managed a lawn care/landscaping business. This is where I worked full-time during the Summers of 2020 and 2021, and part time during the summer of 2022, when I solely managed the business while simultaneously working at the Lincoln Community Center. Over the past three summers we partnered with an established local mulch supplier, Chaney’s Nursery, gaining access to their overflow clients and receiving bulk discount on purchased mulch in exchange for provided business and advertisement. As part of managing the business, I recorded all business operations and clientele information on Excel, to maintain professional organization and to allow for ease of business model assessment. This led to constant revision of business structure over time and directly contributed to an increase in profits from $20,000 in 2020, to $35,000 in 2021 (despite working one less month than 2020), and a projected profit of $45,000 in 2022 (Assuming two full-time workers). This revision also led to an optimization of per hour profits during the summer of 2022 ($55/hour). A large portion of the success of the landscaping business can be attributed to the intentional use of a customer focused approach, where emphasis was placed on catering to needs of customers in a friendly, honorable, and respectful way. This was intended to maximize customer satisfaction through being able to provide quality work at competitor-beating prices, while networking and creating client relationships. The use of this approach led to receiving tips on many occasions and reports from Chaney’s Nursery, claiming positive customer reviews via phone call subsequently after jobs had been completed. During my work, I have negotiated, communicated and networked with over 130 clients, engaging in various work: mowing, mulching, painting, tree removal, bush trimming, bush/tree planting, power washing, laying stone walkways, and moving furniture.
