The Kentucky Division of Forestry assigned me to the Forest Inventory Analysis Program. Working with this program I was able to experience first hand resource management field work. My duties included accompanying Kentucky's certified foresters out into the field for data collection as well as data analysis. I had the chance to visit the program's protected data collection forest plots, where tree heights, diameters, age and foliage were collected. Additionally, species counts, invasive species counts/rate of spread, down woody material, and soil composition were also collected for the program database. It was a great opportunity to participate directly with a resource management program and I hope to continue with this track professionally.

I was given the opportunity to intern for Shield Environmental Associates. My responsibilities ranged across the company's operations. Primarily, I was a member of the water monitoring well drill team, which included drilling new wells, removing old ones, and general maintenance of the wells and drilling equipment. Additionally, I was given the opportunity to groundwater sample and soil sample areas contaminated with petroleum. I was also present for contamination remediation projects the company oversaw. Outside of the field, I was able to write preliminary reports for clients as well as the data analysis and entry for the reports. Overall it was a comprehensive and enjoyable introduction to the environmental consulting field.

The leadership role allowed me to fine tune my workplace problem solving skills especially in a collaborative work environment.
