Profile bio

About Brett Wean

I am the Director of Writing and Entertainment Outreach at The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the nation's largest suicide prevention organization. This role has significant personal meaning for me, as I am a survivor of suicide loss. I have served as a member of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline's Individual and Family Lived Experience Committee. I regularly host entertainment-themed live streams for AFSP, including the #RealConvo Concert Series, interviews with content creators, and co-host "Ask Dr. Jill," along with AFSP's Vice President of Research, Dr. Jill Harkavy-Friedman, in partnership with The Mighty (themighty.com.) Previous to my role at AFSP, I worked in book publishing, in both editorial and marketing, as well as being an actor and writer. I have taught improvisation at New York's People's Improv Theater (The PIT), and wrote a monthly column for Script Magazine (www.scriptmag.com) called "Improvising Screenplays," in which I applied the fundamentals of improv to writing for the screen. I have written for publications including TimeOut New York. I was also an editor/producer at a major career and lifestyle website. As an actor, I made my feature film debut in Breakup at a Wedding, produced by Zachary Quinto’s Before the Door Pictures. I have appeared on television in various commercial campaigns, including New York Lottery’s major Little Bit O’ Luck character reboot, as well as projects for Twix, Comedy Central, VH-1, Mars, Dish Network, and more. I once hosted an episode of MTV.com's funny retro music video show, "Weird Vibes." I performed and taught at New York City’s acclaimed People’s Improv Theater (“Best Improv Lessons” – New York Magazine) after being introduced to the art of improvisational comedy at The Upright Citizens Brigade, which Rolling Stone Magazine has referred to as comedy’s “Hot Farm Team.” I’ve taken improvisational acting’s fundamental tenets to heart not just on the stage, but embodying its concepts in my writing, as well as in the time I spend working with others, and helping to create campaigns, conducting interviews in videos, and eliciting stories from those whose personal experiences can help inform, educate, and change minds. I've trained others in improv skills, including the incoming class of NYU’s Stern School of Business, as well as a graduate class at Columbia's Business School. I get a particular kick out of winning over the most cynical people, and showing them how the improv spirit of Yes-And, active listening, and agreement can become a powerful tool in any setting.

Listed skills include Copywriting, Storytelling, Creative Writing, Editing, and 36 others.
