Senior Software Engineer
• Lead developer on the document and image viewing applications for: (1) the Plastic Logic 100, a WinCE based E Ink reader being used as a textbook replacement in Russian schools, and (2) an unreleased next generation Android e-reader device for consumers and education.• Investigated and implemented ways to use Android and WinCE effectively with E Ink screens including designing and developing custom UI controls optimized for E Ink. The modifications ranged from devising an appropriate skin to completely rewriting the control. These controls are used by multiple applications internally and will be part of an external API.• Collaborated with different departments and outside contractors to design the UI for the product.• Architected a plugin system for document renderers as well as developing text and image implementations of this plugin.

• Responsible for developing the Digital Editions software suite: a suite of software applications to support ebooks on PCs and embedded device and a DRM system for protecting these books.• Acted as a liason to external development teams creating embedded devices incorporating the software. As part of the support for these devices, I helped port the C++ rendering engine to different operating systems, utilized fixed point computations to see an average 375% speedup in rendering times on devices without a FPU, and fixed incompatibilities between systems.• Modified a C++ rendering engine to improve speed and content, including implementation of page numbering and navigation for epub files and improved support for the Sony reader.• Created a system for managing server side DRM fulfillment of ebooks. This solution is comprised of Java WebServices talking to the databases on the server as well as Java and Flex based front ends. • Improved a Flex based cross platform desktop ebook application. By optimizing conversion algorithms, reduced import time for large libraries of books from multiple hours to less than ten minutes. Optimized UI to allow more personalization of the user’s view of books while taking less memory and speeding up access.

Developed software for transferring videos between a TiVo box and a PC as well as viewing and playback of music, photos, and video from a networked PC by enhancing a version of TiVo Desktop (Windows). Added support for localization, greatly increased transfer speed and stability, and resolved compatibility issues. Coordinated specification writing, test plan, and QA efforts. • Project lead for new functionality allowing music and photos from USB mass storage devices to be played on the TiVo platform. This involved massive restructuring to existing code to allow for multiple devices and reading from non network locations, kernel changes for increased support of USB mass storage devices and hotplug notification for device notification, and creating a user interface to easily access these files. • Adapted the TiVo embedded platform for use in the Asian market including changes in video format, localization, and general improvements.• Enabled high level support for encrypted video streams using content access cards. • Improved web support of products, including incorporation of RSS feeds.
