About Brian Collins
Once a potential public school music teacher, now an aspiring higher education/student affairs professional. As a certified music teacher in the state of Michigan and a passionate professional musician, I love any chance I get to participate in music. This often comes in the form of working with young musicians as a clinician during band camps and honor bands, or performing in various pits for musicals and community ensembles. I also substitute teach in music classrooms often so students can still rehearse with a certified music educator while their usual music teacher is away. However involved in music I continue to be, I have a newly ignited passion to serve students in the higher education setting as my career moving forward. There's something incredibly special about helping a student learn more about themselves, decide what challenges they want to confront, and guiding them along the path that will allow them to realize and achieve their goals. Meeting students where they are and taking them where they want to be; seeing the spark of ambition in their eyes as they slowly start to discover they are capable of taking their lives into their own hands; understanding they are able to take control and make their own decisions; allowing themselves to discover, pursue, and attain their educational and career aspirations; and knowing that they don't have to take this arduous journey alone. While I may not end up as the music educator I always thought I would be, I am still the passionate educator who has an unwavering drive to guide students through their education in a variety of supportive roles within the realm of higher education and student affairs, all the while still following my passions as a musician as well.I am an individual who finds passion in everything that I do. I always stand for what I believe is right and will advocate for others whenever I have the ability to do so. I believe in the fight to attain social justice in not only higher education, but in all areas of life. I believe in continuous self-awareness and self-reflection to allow growth of the individual. I support human rights for all humans regardless of social identity. I wish for an era of peace and unity, while celebrating individuality. These are just a few of the causes I am proud to say I fight for every day.
