EmCare was brought in to Johnson Regional to help with severe physician staffing shortfalls. We had a successful partnership during this period, and EmCare provided crucial support and resources as we adjusted to the new workflow patterns which came along with increasing volumes as well as the new demands of EHR and Physician Order Entry. During this time, we implemented new flow processes and AEDIT, and saw our LWOT rate drop from a peak of 14%, down to 3% by January 2014, down to our present low rate of 1-2%. We saw similar dramatic improvements in other operational metrics, as well.

As Johnson Regional faced the implementation of EMR and Physician Order Entry, I was recruited for this position because of my expertise on EMRs in the clinic setting. During this time, we successfully implemented Picis, Johnson Regional's first EMR. Our implementation of Physician Order Entry in 2012 enabled Johnson Regional to meet its Meaningful Use Stage I goals.

In 2008, I became Johnson Regional Medical Center's first hospitalist, pioneering the program which continues to this date. For nearly three years, I was the sole hospitalist for this 80-bed hospital, covering all admissions and most inpatient care, each weekend from Friday at 7 pm until Monday at 7 am. As time progressed, I also began to work as an ER physician, covering some weekday ER shifts, as the hospital began to suffer a staffing crisis. Over time, the demand grew for ER coverage, and I began to transition to a full-time ER physician, and eventually ER Medical Director.

As the owner of a solo Family Practice clinic, I continued to provide full-service Family Practice care in clinic, hospital and nursing home. I continued to deliver between 50-100 babies per year, performed tubal ligations, cesarean sections, treadmill stress tests, EGDs and colonoscopies. During this time, I successfully implemented an office-based EHR, Amazing Charts, and became proficient in the use of Dragon Naturally Speaking. I was an active member of the Amazing Charts online community, acting as an admin for the Amazing Charts User Board, and spoke at the first Amazing Charts User Conference in June 2008 on the subject of Dragon Naturally Speaking integration.
